San Diego pastor at Vatican: Gay marriage is "clearly demonic"

THE VATICAN -- One of California's most vulgar anti-gay activists has been at the Vatican this week during a summit on marriage called by Pope Francis.

Jim Garlow, pastor of Skyline Church in eastern San Diego County, is an Evangelical who uses extremist language to demean gay rights, marriage equality and LGBT rights. He was among the Americans invited to attend the Vatican summit along with anti-gay activist Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council.

Perkins broadcast his "Washington Watch" program from the Vatican this week and invited his old buddy, Garlow, to appear on the show.

Garlow told Perkins that the summit could spawn a new ecumenical faction to battle the "demonic movement to destroy marriage."

“The attack on marriage is global,” Garlow said. “I believe it’s clearly demonic.”

Garlow called for “an onslaught of people who come together of very different values” to defend marriage from Satan.

The homophobic pastor is reviled in California for leading the effort to pass Proposition 8, which took away marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples in the Golden State. Prop 8 was later knocked down by federal and appellate courts, then the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the anti-gay groups that appealed the lower court rulings had no legal standing to defend the law.
