Some low-income children in Hillcrest will get new school supplies thanks to local organizations.
The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus and the Imperial Court de San Diego are giving school kids the tools they need to have a successful year of learning by donating backpacks and school supplies to Florence Elementary School in Hillcrest.
Executive Director of the chorus, Bob Lehman, fresh from his trip to San Francisco for the Harvey Milk ship naming ceremony, filled the back of his SUV with a variety of backpacks raging from Minnie Mouse to Star Wars ready to hand out to needy famlies just before school starts.
Lehman tells SDGLN that his organization is, “happy to pitch in and help the Imperial Court make back-to-school time extra special for local kids."
Their goal is to help 200 kids whose families may not be financially able to afford school supplies.
"We love helping our local families and their kids. That's what being part of this community is all about," Lehman said.
