Michael McQuiggan, or "McQ" as some know him, has one of the best known faces, and smiles, around Hillcrest, especially if you like everything about the silver screen.
He is the man behind FilmOut San Diego and as Program Director brings the best in new LGBT content to the biggest LGBT film festival South of Los Angeles.
Not only that, but he celebrates classic films by putting them back in the cinema for one night at the Hillcrest Landmark Cinema throughout the year.
He’s a happy person who loves what he does and despite the odds seems to make everything go as smoothly a possible.
However early this year Michael had a major setback; he was diagnosed with Lymphoma which has made his life slow down just a bit, but in true form he is fighting the cancer into full remission.
In fact, he’s not even half-way through the painful and uncomfortable chemo treatments and the cancer is now in full remission.
But this takes time, and due to exhaustion and his body fighting the disease, he has had to take a leave of absence from work at a local real estate company, only bringing home half his salary he would normally get.
With rising cost of health care, this next setback serves as another reminder of how devastating cancer can be not only on the body, but on one's livelihood.
Of course, Michael would never ask for help on his own, as many of us wouldn’t. That’s why his friends have stepped forward to create a GoFundMe page in order to raise money for his healthcare bill.
His friends started the page to help put a dent in the $40,000 not covered by medical insurance and lost wages.
