This donation drive has become a tradition with the Imperial Court de San Diego.
For over 30 years San Diego kids heading back to school have been given backpacks by the Imperial Court de San Diego. Over 500 backpacks were loaded with school supplies such as pens, notebooks, pencils, crayons, erasers, and other necessities were donated this year.
Starting at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, backpacks were provided before the first day of school through the LGBT Center's Family Matters and Latino Services programs.
Florence Elementary School has been a recipient of these backpacks for the past five years thanks to the Imperial Court and this year their charity will be a permanent part of the campus as "Emperor I Omar's Closet," a storage room with supplies and food will help kids and families in need happy all year long.
Many of the children come from families who live below the poverty line. "Emperor I Omar's Closet" is Named after Hillcrest businessman Omar Lowry who in 1973 was elected San Diego's first Emperor.
Over $2,500.00 was donated to Florence Elementary School to establish and stock the closet.
"It is the community and friend's support of the Imperial Court that has made our support of many children's projects for over 45 years possible," stated City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez, the honorary "Mayor of Hillcrest" who has established many of the children's projects from the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Toys For Kids Drive and Queen Eddie Youth Fund at the LGBT Center
The official artwork of Florence Elementary School's Mascot; The Falcon, was also donated by well-known artist Clarione Guiterrez of the local HRC chapter. HRC of San Diego has also assisted the school with different needs.
