Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)  is a day started in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith who began a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed a year earlier.

Since then it has become an important day to honor all of those who have been murdered just for being who they are.

"The Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence," said Smith in 2017. "I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice."

So far in 2018, there have been 310 trans men and women who have been killed worldwide with 22 reported in the United States.

Although TDOR is important in bringing awareness to violence against trans people it is also important that people continue to advocate for change all year long.

Attending political rallies, and other events are one of the best ways to be active in the community.

Below are a few special events being held in San Diego for Transgender Day of Remembrance.
