Tiger's Pictionary at #1 Fifth Ave. raises big bucks in 2019

One of San Diego's longest-running weekly LGBTQ community fundraising events, Tiger's Pictionary, announced Wednesday that in 2019, they raised $12,104 for local charities.

First held on July 25, 2011 on the back patio of popular Hillcrest bar #1 Fifth Avenue, Tiger's Pictionary has become a weekly Wednesday night phenomenen, drawing in all sorts of diverse community members for a fun evening of drinks, fundraising, an of course, Pictionary!

Karen Fort, known by most in the community as "Tiger" and who served as Ms. San Diego Leather in 2010, hosted that first Pictionary event in 2011 as birthday party for a close friend, wanting to do something fun and different. According to the "About Us" note on Tiger's Pictionary's Facebook page, "...our small birthday party grew into a raucous night of laughter and yelling as patrons wandered in and joined us." Tiger said that people started giving her tips as she hosted the evening, and after collecting the first $100 in tips, she wrote a check for that amount to Special Delivery of San Diego.

"Truly a night to remember, the bar staff asked if I would consider hosting Tiger’s Pictionary as a weekly event. Of course I said yes," according to Tiger's Facebook note. And so Pictionary began. Since then, the weekly Pictionary event has benefited dozens of charities, most of them local LGBTQ+ organizations.

The total raised each year continues to grow, and the organizers were very proud to announce this year's total. Because of the growth of the event over the years the San Diego Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and other community members have begun volunteering to assist Tiger in the effort.

Everyone is welcome to join in the weekly fun (although there will be no Pictionary next week due to the Christmas holiday). According to the Pictionary description, there is "no need [for participants] to do anything but show up and start yelling at the whiteboard!" Those who guess correctly get to come up and draw next, and are a given a free ticket for a chance to win one of the weekly prizes, most provided by local businesses. Participants are also encouraged to bring cash if they'd like to support the charity of the evening - beneficiaries change weekly.

#1 Fifth Avenue is located at 3845 Fifth Ave. in Hillcrest. Pictionary is held every Wednesday night (some holidays excluded) on the bar's back patio at "7:30pm-ish sharp!" The venue is open to those 21 years an older.
