News from Councilmember Todd Gloria

Happy Holidays to each of you! My latest District Three Dialogue newsletter is attached and includes information on budget cuts, historic resources and some accomplishments in our neighborhoods.

I hope you are taking the opportunity to participate in the myriad holiday events throughout Council District Three this season. The North Park Holiday Parade, December Nights, lighting the tree in Kensington and helping our San Diego City Firefighters hand out holiday food to City Heights neighbors all helped get me in the holiday spirit last weekend and provided necessary perspective as I contemplate the challenges before us.

Coffee with your Councilmember
My final community coffee in 2009 is this Saturday morning. I hope you’ll join me to informally discuss issues of interest to you.

City Budget Developments
Tomorrow, the City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed reductions to the current budget. The main article in the attached District Three Dialogue outlines some of the proposals. I remain seriously concerned about the impacts of the cuts, especially in the Police and Fire-Rescue Departments. Chiefs from both departments stated they would have implementation plans prepared next week, and I will be back in touch with you then so you understand how our neighborhood services will change until the City generates the money we need to provide them.

Public input has helped shape our discussion of how we approach our largest ever deficit, and I am grateful to each of you who have taken the time to share your suggestions and comment over the last few months. The final community forum about the proposed changes to the City budget is tonight, and the City Council will deliberate final remedies tomorrow and next Monday. Details for all three public meetings are below, and your participation is encouraged.

Proposed Transit Cuts
As mentioned in my last e-newsletter, the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) intends to cut $7 million in transit service to overcome sales tax revenue shortfalls. To preserve the network of weekday services and to impact as few riders as possible, MTS is proposing to substantially reduce serve on Sundays. A public hearing has been scheduled for the MTS Board Meeting this Thursday, December 10. If you did not participate in the public outreach meetings in November, please take the time to comment by attending the meeting, emailing mts.planning@sdmts.com or by calling 619-557-4912. All information about the proposed cuts is available at www.sdmts.com.

Storm Damage
I hope you all weathered Monday’s storm unfettered. Unfortunately, our Council district was quite affected. On my way to work this morning, I noticed storm drain problems, street signal outages and tree limbs lining the streets. Please call the City’s Streets Division at (619) 527-7500 to report problems in your neighborhoods. Be sure to request a ticket number, so that my office can help you to track the status of your issue. I want to thank our City employees who worked late into the night and were back out early this morning addressing these matters.
