COMMENTARY: The Supreme Court, Prop 8, DOMA and the gun-toting "Christians"

My partner Susan asked me this morning what I thought about the U.S. Supreme Court hearing the DOMA and Prop 8 cases. I just shrugged and said: “I’ll wait until they rule.”

For me to even say anything about what I believe will happen would just be pure speculation. Who even knows what lies in the minds of these Supreme Court justices? It is, after all, the Supreme Court and we all know that in some cases they aren’t doling out any sort of justice.

My daughter Shannon is a lawyer and she has to remind me all the time that “it’s a court of law, not a court of justice.” I like to believe they are one and the same - law and justice – but they most certainly are not.

What I find most unnerving is the backlash of the Supreme Court agreeing to hear these cases. There are a few pages on Facebook that I tend to look at on a regular basis. I don’t look at them because I like what they have to say, I look at them because I want to know what it is I need to be aware of and what it is these folks are planning in their collective conservative minds.

These are not pages with only a few hundred people liking, reading and commenting. These are pages with 25,000 followers and over 100,000 people reading, commenting and sharing, with more people signing up every day. They are telling their followers to buy all the guns they can and stockpile ammunition; they hate, hate, hate President Obama and call the first lady Moochelle. They believe the President is a Muslim, they want abortion to be abolished at any cost, and they believe that gay marriage will be the ruination of America. They believe, and I’m going to quote here: “The gay activist movement uses hippie love and false issues of fair play and equality to confuse those already overloaded by the MSM AND HOLLYWOOD LIES ABOUT THE SO LOVING LEFT! I’m not really sure what this even means – but I think there is some sort of bash in there.

The thing I find most annoying is that they wrap all the venom in Bible verses and profess their love of Jesus, and say beyond anything else in their lives – they are Christians. Hence their cover picture, seen on this page.

They like to say they aren’t anti-gay – they are simply anti-gay marriage. This moves them into the “hate the sin, love the sinner” sort of thing. On the other hand – they believe that homosexuality is a sin and homosexuals should not be afforded any of the rights that were given by our blessed Founders. In one particular thread, it went from Sodom and Gomorrah to we (the gays) should all be sent to camps, to we (the gays) want their children, to making sure their weapons were loaded so they could defend what is left of “their” country.

So – it’s not the Supreme Court and their ruling that I fear; it’s these gun-toting, anti-gay marriage, anti-Obama “Christian” folks that frighten me. The more they believe is being taken away from them, the more dangerous I believe they become. It doesn’t matter that nothing – absolutely nothing – is being taken away from them – it’s what they believe they have lost, what they are being told they have lost, and what they believe they need to do in order to “take their country back.”

The danger to the gay community is not going to end simply because of a Supreme Court ruling. No matter how they rule – folks will be keeping their weapons locked and loaded and ready to defend what they believe is their America. As sad as it is in the year 2012 – the gay community still has much to fear.
