Jim Winsor’s Out & About: Unite! Music Festival is now a charity benefit event

There have been a couple major developments concerning the parties happening during San Diego Pride this year, the first one being the announcement by the Unite! Music Festival that it will now be charity event: a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Sunburst Youth Housing Project.

Unite! co-promoter Cavin Knight posted this moving and emotional message on his Facebook page last Friday, explaining the decision:

“Today I signed an agreement related to UNITE Music Festival that I'm more excited about than any other announcement we've made. I'm proud to announce that a portion of the proceeds from our festival will be donated to Sunburst Youth Housing Project. The Housing Project provides affordable, supportive housing for youth between 18-24 years of age, with a special focus on LGBTQ and HIV+ youth.

Many of these high-risk youth were living in the streets or in public spaces after having been ejected from their homes because of their sexual orientation. Being rejected for who I am when others don't understand or approve is something I've had to deal with my entire life.

Many of you may not know of my own brief struggle with homelessness after escaping the clutches of my extremist Mormon upbringing in Utah the day after I graduated high school. I drove to San Diego with $650 in my pocket, no job, no place to live and without knowing a single soul here. I didn't know how I was going to make it, I just knew I had to escape Utah.

18 years of holding up a facade to stay alive had taken its toll. I slept in my truck on the beach for a few nights while visiting the San Diego LGBT Community Center each day for signs of hope in the form of a job and/or a place to crash. Finally, I found a few good Samaritans who were willing to rent a room to me for a steal while I got on my feet. From there, I worked my ass off to survive and never looked back.

]I'm grateful for all that San Diego has done for me and now it's time to give back. Had this program been around at that time in my life, I might have desperately needed it. I'm so glad we have it available to our local youth as its' cause is near and dear to my heart. To be able to assist in this small way means the world to me and my partners and, hopefully, to you too.

MUSIC, LOVE and COMMUNITY. Enjoy the festivities and be a part of a cause we hold dear to our hearts."

XOXO,

The UNITE! Team”

The 5-party Unite! Music Festival is scheduled to run during San Diego Pride Weekend, July 15 to July 18.

Pride on the Pier DJs announced

The second bit of news concerns the Pride on the Pier party on Saturday, July 16, put on by the Royalty Group (consisting of promoters Paul Nicholls, Justin David and Jeffrey Sanker). Up until now, the DJ lineup for that party had been a closely guarded secret, but yesterday they were finally announced: they will be DJs Phil Romano, Dani Toro, and Tracy Young, with a special warm up set by local favorite DJ Taj.

And there’s more good news too: you can still get discounted pre-sale tickets. Passes right now are still only $69 for general admission and $89 for VIP, and those prices will hold until midnight this coming Tuesday, May 17.

Beyonce Formation Tour Concert After Party at Rich's

Speaking of DJ Tracy Young, she will be spinning the Beyonce Formation Tour Concert After Party at Rich's tonight, from 10 pm to 2 am. So, all you folks coming back from the Beyonce concert tonight can get another serving of B, courtesy of one of her official remixers.

DIVAS at Rich's Nightclub

Season eight, top-four finalist of Ru Paul's Drag Race, Chi Chi DeVayne, will headline at Rich's nightclub as the DIVAS drag spectacular takes to the stage on Friday May, 13. Not only will the show feature the Logo reality star, but some of San Diego's finest drag talent will be on hand to entertain you: Paris Sukomi Max, Kickxy Vixen, Jazmyn Simone, Coco Chanel, and Vanity Jones.

Overdrive at Spin Nightclub

And this Saturday, get ready for another fun night of Overdrive at Spin. This month features a “special high-intensity birthday set” by resident DJ Tristan Jaxx, plus deep house/techno by Unite! Music Festival DJ Noir D Costas.

Cover is free before 11 pm, with a $5 Svedka Vodka Happy Hour from 10 pm to midnight. Plus they’ll be giving away lots of swag for the aforementioned Unite! Music Festival, including some great new designer tank tops.
