Indie/Punk band from Northwest hopes to match UK success in US
W Hotels’ Wonderlust Live Concert series celebrated its final date last Friday, with a dynamic performance from indie/punk trio Gossip. The band, fronted by Beth Ditto, blew audience members away, blaring out tunes from their recent album Music for Men.
The W Hotel offered a modest setting which combined well with the DJ’s electro set, pleasing the ears of all who attended.
“I much prefer these intimate settings,” said Ditto. “The music is all about giving yourself to the fans. I mean, I love it when we get requests for songs because we’re giving them what they want, and I remember when I was watching bands play live and thinking please please play that song! I actually feel guilty in large venues, because it’s harder to really give yourself to the audience.”
Gossip, originally formed in 1999 in Olympia, Washington, first shot to fame on the UK charts with their smash hit Standing in the Way of Control and now, the band feels it’s time to conquer America.
“We don’t really expect the same success here as we’ve had in the UK,” says drummer, Hannah Blilie.
Despite the band’s notions that their western hemisphere success may not be as notable as what they’ve accomplished elsewhere in the world, judging from the performance they delivered, this reviewer feels confident in saying the band will soon find themselves well established in the US.
