Ah the sweet sound of Christmas is here! Holiday Pops – A Winter Pops Concert by our magnificent San Diego Symphony is definitely something to cheer about. It POPS baby! For those that don’t know, POPS stands for Philharmonic Orchestra/Philharmonic Symphony and this year we have a wonderful performance that also includes a Mariachi.
The performance, which includes guest pianist Michael Cavenaugh, Mexican soprano Monica Abrego, Mariachi Champaña Nevin, the San Diego Master Chorale and the San Diego Children’s Choir, is a gleeful delight for all ages.
The participation of Mariachi Champaña Nevin was remarkable and transcends borders recognizing our California/Mexican heritage. It was a perfect blend of Mexican and European classical music.
Conductor Matthew Garbutt led the recital in fabulous red plaid pants – his own holiday tradition!
The wonderfully sexy Michael Cavenaugh (my favorite Music Man), returns straight from Broadway after 1,200 performances of the Tony nominated musical Moving Out. Mr. Cavenaugh is someone that I would love to take Christmas caroling; he is very attractive, extremely talented and he can rock the piano and belt out my favorite songs like no other! His electric guitar rendition of Jingle Bell Rock will have you swooning.
Mexican soprano Monica Abrego was most impressive and her voice was just harmonious with both the Mariachi and the Orchestra. I had forgotten how intense a soprano’s voice can be and how it can pierce through the aisles.
Among many other favorites, this concert also included songs from The Nutcracker (ala Mexicana) and the San Diego Children’s Choir performed Sandman from Hansel and Gretel. It was the perfect combination this holiday season. Do not miss the Winter POPS concert series – check it out!
