Jim Winsor’s Out & About: As Spin Saturdays wind down, the gay boys invade Gossip Grill

Spin Saturdays, the weekly gay night at Spin Nightclub, is once again going on hiatus.

I talked with owner Chris Braga about it this week, and "as for why we are taking a break from gay Saturdays, [it’s] that no matter how great the lights and sound and DJ, maybe the economy has finally hit us. And my gays have trouble with coming 9/10th's of a mile down the hill."

They'll be retooling their Saturday nights to a more hetero format, beginning this weekend with the Lifted 10th Anniversary party with DJs Mark Farina and Miguel Migs.

"Future Saturdays will be amazing and all are welcome," Chris said, "no matter where you put your penis or vagina."

Hopefully this hiatus will once again be only temporary! And of course, I would not be surprised to see special community events to happen there from time to time ... Pride weekend parties, for example.

And in any case, there are still two gay-themed events on the calendar for this month, that WILL go on as scheduled:

Club Papi with Elvis Crispo at Spin

The first of those events will be a special Club Papi at Spin on Saturday, April 9. In addition host Ms. Lola, music by DJs Eduardo and Ben, and the mucho caliente Papi go go dancers, the night will showcase a live performance by none other than the king of merengue music, Elvis Crespo!

Elvis will perform songs from his latest release "Indestructible" as well as other classic hits. And there'll be a special VIP Meet-and-Greet available for his fans, where they can get pictures with him and personalized autographs.

Jock Ball: The final gay Spin at Spin

The second event will be Saturday, April 16, when SDPIX presents Jock Ball. A sports themed night with DJ Manny Lehman, all San Diego gay sports teams get free cover before 11 pm. Look for more details here in a couple weeks ... since it's the last official gay night at Spin for a while, I predict it's gonna be big!

Gay boys to take over Gossip Grill during Dinah

Since Gossip Grill will be relatively deserted by the ladies this coming Dinah Shore weekend ... the gay boys are taking over!

Yep, it's " When the Cat's Away, the Mice Will Play" this weekend at Gossip Grill.

Look for special guest gay staffers Kevin Gardner, Jesse Gonzales, Nino Rigor from Urban Mo's and Chris Barone from Baja Betty's to join forces with Gossip's only male server/bartender Justin Nelson (aka the Gossip Grill "LezBro") to reinvent the restaurant for the weekend.

For example, on Saturday there'll be new "manly" drinks on the menu, such as "Twinky Pinky" and "Menage-a-Cock," along with $5 Three Olives "DUDE" specials from 8 to 10 pm.

And on Sunday, April 3, get ready for a "Boys Bottomless Mimosa Brunch" (tops welcome too!), featuring $10 bottomless mimosas from 10 am to 2 pm, and DJ James Adams throwing down the jams from 2 to 7 pm.

But what if you're a gal who didn't go to Palm Springs this weekend? "Come play with the boys!" Justin said. "This is still the girls’ home. We are just, like typical boys, throwing a raging party while mom and dad are out of town. Plus there will still be some familiar female staff faces to keep us boys in line."

Last week's events

Be sure to check out all the new albums from last week on SDPIX, including photos from the Feeding American Food Bank grand opening, Jake's on 6th, The Loft, and over 500 photos from last Saturday's Rufskin Fashion show at Rich's.

And that's a wrap on this week ... see you all out and about!
