Jim Winsor’s Out & About: A week of comedians, charities and closings

I hope you're all fully recovered from the White Party, because we have another fun-filled week ahead here in San Diego!

Laugh Out Proud at Martinis

For example, tonight's the premiere of Laugh Out Proud, Martinis Above Fourth's new monthly gay and lesbian comedy show.

The show kicks off at 8 pm, and features local LGBT comedians Sean Wherley, Lauren Holiday, Larry Tadlock and Sarah Burford. The show is designed to showcase the region's top LGBT and allied comedians in a safe environment for the LGBT community.

Produced and hosted by San Diego-based out comedians Wherley and Buford, the show is free with a two-item minimum purchase required, and guests are welcome to come early to enjoy a full dinner menu.

Jock Ball, the last spin at Spin

Then on Saturday, get ready for the last official gay night at Spin before it transitions into its more hetero (but still musically awesome) format.

The theme will be " Jock Ball," which means whether you like lean swimmers, beefy footballers, tall basketball players or muscular wrestlers, this party will have them all! Not mention incredible music by DJs Manny Lehman, Luis Perez and Big Chris.

Look for a locker room fantasy with the fittest athletes in the city tossing off their shirts and dancing the night away on at this three-level, 10,000-square-foot entertainment complex. Boasting two separate dance floors, open air roof deck with views of the city, 70,000 watts of thunderous Avalon sound and kinetic lighting and lasers, this club is a true assault on the senses.

SDPIX has invited every member of all of the San Diego athletic teams to join us on the dance floor with no cover for team members before 11:00 pm. All you gotta do is RSVP and get on the guest list!

It'll also be the main stop for the Kristin Doving and Davina Kostiana Love birthday week extravaganza, so you can bet it's going to be a night to remember! Or, try to remember ...

Benefit for Mack's back at Eden

On Monday, there's another big comedy night: “That’s What Friends are For,” a charitable event at Eden to raise money to help out a local promoter and great friend Michael Mack, who as many of you know has been suffering from severe back problems due to two herniated discs, and other medical complications:

"We all know how Michael has devoted so much of his time and energy to benefit our community and others in need. But for the last two and a half years fate has lead him in a different direction. A proud but humble man, Michael never imagined that he would one day find himself in the position to come to his friends for help. Fortunately, a loyal group of good friends of Michael’s have come together to raise the support needed to help him through these difficult financial times."

Hosted by a wide array of community members (including Big Mike, Alan Spyere, Johnathan Hale, Nicholas Moede, Lisa Sanders, Meghan Renee, Dora Guillen, Anthony Cortez, Danni Pomplun, Dave Catton, Matthew Ramon, Dave Cohen, Dave Trick, Raymond Martin, Edward Camarillo, Gardenia Partridge, Derek Soderblom, Rob Corea, David Miles and Tony Phipps), the night promises to be “A night of outrageous comedy”, starring the "Goddess of Comedy" herself, Judy Tenuta. Joining her will be drag legends Chad Michaels, La Donna and Fontasia of the Dream Girls, with music provided be DJ Luis Perez.

The event begins at 7 pm, with a suggested donation of $10 at the door. There'll also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and tons of laughter. If you are unable to attend, you may still find it in your heart to help with any amount. Please make your check payable to The Ben Dillingham Grant, ( memo “Michael Mack") and mail to Big Mike , P.O. Box 33224, San Diego, CA 92163. All donations are tax deductible.
