Editor's note: June is here, and our attention turns to vacation time. Here are some timely tips for travelers.
For the Love of Travel - Travel Essentials
“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag
Whether you are navigating the streets of Moscow or hiking the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, or just walking down the streets of Toledo here are a few travel tips that are sure to pack a bit of glamour and sensibility. Whether you are traveling for pleasure or business the following items will make your trip more comfortable.
Carry-on Baggage Tips and Pocket Safety
Think Small …
The maximum size carry-on bag for most airlines is 22″ x 14″ x 9″ ... Luggage is always on sale at any major retailer. T.J. Maxx and Marshals are best bets to find inexpensive carry on luggage. Anything larger should be checked. No oversize packages or luggage can be stowed on board.
Think Smart …
Plan to check more of your baggage and carry on less. Check with your airline before packing to determine its carry-on guidelines regarding the number of items you may carry on and the maximum size of those items. In certain situations the airline may require most or even all of your bags to be checked, so be prepared to do so.
Front-pocket Wallet – Backup Documents
Some cities, like London and Rome, are notorious for their pick-pockets. When traveling, a back-pocket wallet or a purse is an invitation to robbery. A front-pocket wallet, with a couple ID and credit cards and a money clip, is a much safer bet – harder to steal, easier to keep track of as you move around, and in the end (no pun intended) more comfortable. Women, choose pants with front pockets when you travel; the unexpectedness of a woman keeping her money in a wallet in her pocket adds even more security. Bonus tip: There is no sure-fire guarantee you won’t be robbed, no matter what precautions you take (though I’ve never been). Always keep cash in a few places about your body – a little in your wallet, a little in another pocket, a little in your sock, and so on. The idea is to have thorough records in case you do lose your ID or credit cards. Make copies of your passport and tickets and keep them in a safe place in your luggage. If your passport is stolen, a copy will speed up the replacement process. Leave a second copy of your passport with a family member back home. You may also want to bring copies of other documents, such as your credit card’s rental car insurance coverage information, depending on your destination. It’s also a good idea to bring telephone numbers for your bank, credit card company and, if relevant, travel agency in case you need to contact them.
