Jim Winsor’s Out & About: A funny and fun-filled CityFest weekend

Hillcrest has really become comedy central as of late. It was just last month that we were treated to some great performances at FilmOut's Comedy Night, and tonight (Thursday) we see not one but two big comedy shows, back to back:

Laugh Out Proud at MA4

The first one up is the new monthly Laugh Out Proud at Martinis Above Fourth at 8 pm, and features two LGBT comedians: Headliner Amy Snowden along with local LGBT comedian Sarah Burford. They'll be joined by local allied comedians Allison Gill and Chris Clobber:

"Snowden was a finalist on the Jon Lovitz “Find Me a Comic” contest and won a similar event on FX’s "The Man Show." The Oakdale, La., native regularly performs at the Hollywood Improv and Comedy Store in Los Angeles, and her television appearances include "America’s Got Talent" and "Comedy Time."

The show is free, but is limited to guests 21 and older. Guests are welcome to come early to enjoy a full dinner menu in the lounge setting of Martinis Above Fourth. Reservations are required for dinner and may be made by calling (619) 400-4500 or visiting www.martinisabovefourth.com. All other seating is first come, first served."

Comedy Night at Flicks with Judy Tenuda

Then at 10 pm we have Comedy Night at Flicks, with none other than the Love Goddess herself, Judy Tenuda! For those of you not familiar with her, here's her bio:

"Judy Tenuta is the most famous person who has ever lived... and if you don't believe it, just ask her! She has appeared in "The Vagina Monologues," "Menopause the Musical" both in LA and Chicago, and she's had her own stand-up specials on Showtime, HBO and Lifetime.

The self-described "Love Goddess" and "Aphrodite of the Accordion" has made hundreds of appearances on such popular TV shows as "The View," "Late Night with David Letterman," "Larry King Live," and "Entertainment Tonight.”

Judy's stand-up routine is appropriately described as outrageous, mind-blowing comedy. She recently became an ordained minister, and converts her audiences to her signature religion, "Judyism." A strong advocate for gays, children and women's issues, the fun-loving feminist preaches that all women should be worshiped as "Love Goddesses!""

Tickets are only $15, and can be pre-purchased in person at Flicks, from any bartender on duty.

Mankind Fashion Show and Wet at Bourbon Street

This Thursday is also a busy night at Bourbon Street, with a whole bunch of fun stuff going on. Bunny Baxter will be hosting this week's Wet Contest at Bourbon Street. Get nearly nekked in the shower, for your chance at a $500 in cash and prizes!

Also, tonight is Mailbox Thursday at Bourbon Street. Get a number and receive messages on the TX screens from your secret admirers!

And finally, Mankind will be having at fashion showfeaturing underwear, tanks and more from the local LA designer Timoteo, along with product giveaways all night. This is slated to begin at 11 pm, just before the Wet contest ... so, if you need hot undies for tonight's contest, this should work out very conveniently.

Circuit at Rich's with DJ Dan DeLeon

On Friday the big event of the night looks to be Circuit at Rich's, with DJ Dan DeLeon on the main floor, and DJ Will Z in the front room. Doors open at 10 pm, and the party goes to 2 am.

By the way, you can check out Dan's excellent new Massive Sounds podcast here.

Leo Bar Crawl

This Saturday a group of prominent Leo's (are there any other kind?) are having an August birthday brawl crawl. Their itinerary is as follows:

"10 am- R Gang Eatery (3683 Fifth Ave.)
...* The fabulous owner Rich Sweeney has closed off the entire top floor for us, however it only seats 65. Because of the limit, please RSVP and comment on the wall how many peeps in your party so we can keep track of the first 65.

1 pm - Eden (1202 University Ave.)
* Birthday libations with more friends

3 pm - Urban Mo's (308 University Ave.)
* Yet more friends join us as we round out the crawl at one of our favorite Hillcrest watering holes

Join us for the whole crawl, or come at 1, or come at 3 ... either way, just come and celebrate with us!

Love,
Your favorite Leos (aka the centers of the universe) RAWWWR!

Russ Edra, Jodi Hollow, John "JD" Douglas, Mike Newman, Eric Eiben, Jerry Shipman, John Proctor, Ross Vincent, Ben Gomez, Brian Ruszkiewicz, Jason Moore (Leo at heart, and in every way - but really a Cancer) and Jeff "Leo on the outside, Virgo on the inside" Lehmann!"

These bar crawlers probably shouldn't get too crazy on Saturday afternoon, however, as later that night will be ...

Center Stage at the Birch North Park Theatre

The Center's Young Professionals Council will be hosting an evening of theatrical and comedic (yes, more comedy!) delight on Saturday at the Birch North Park Theatre, in support of the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Center Stage promises a diverse lineup of live entertainment, great food from local eateries, a cash bar (with one freebee; see below), and the inspiration to support those in our community most in need.

Performers include Raven's Grace, Lacy Younger, Unity Dance, Grace Towers, Sara Burford, Jiavani Linayeo, The Drama Club Dropouts, and the Encore Vocal Ensemble, along with your emcee for the evening, Jeff Gelder.

This is an all-ages event (although you still have to be 21 to drink, of course). Tickets are $25 pre-sale and $35 at the door, and include a free cocktail (for those 21+) and appetizers. Doors open at 7 pm, and the show begins at 8 pm.

CityFest 2011

And last but certainly not least ... this Sunday will be an extra fun day, thanks to CityFest: Hillcrest's annual street celebration. Bars near the epicenter such as Urban Mo's, Fiesta Cantina, #1 Fifth Avenue, Brass Rail and The Loft will no doubt be packed to the rafters, as well as a couple of other events of note such as the City Fest party at Busalacchi's featuring DJs Lydia Prim and James Adams, and the Chill Out Party at Babycakes.

In fact, this year you don't even have to wait until Sunday to get in the spirit of CityFest, as many bars and clubs are already pre-partying for the event!

Last week's events

Check out SDPIX for all the action you may have missed from last week, including photos from the Guys Like Us pool party in Hillcrest, and The Range soft opening (the great looking new restaurant in front of the Ruby Room). Happy viewing!
