If you notice an influx of hot out-of-town boys early this weekend, you're not imagining it. The annual Atlantis Mexican Riviera Cruise is scheduled to depart from San Diego this Saturday afternoon at 5pm, and gay cruisers from around the country should be getting into town on Friday afternoon or so.
And just like last year, I'll be aboard as well, along with a considerable contingent of other fellow San Diegans. We'll be gone for a week, sailing south to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta; then back up to San Diego, returning next Saturday, the 22nd.
This will be the first time in three years the cruise has left from San Diego (it left from Long Beach in recent years). And since we're staging our glorious return as the host city for the cruise, a number of the local establishments are rolling out the red carpet, and organizing special events catering to us soon-to-be mariners:
Look for the staff at Urban Mo's (308 University Avenue) to be decked out in cute little sailor outfits this Friday afternoon, as they'll be having a big pre-cruise tea dance this Friday! DJ Dallas will spin from 2 to 6 pm, and DJ Taj from 6 pm to close. Plus there'll be cruise specials ($3.50 wells, $4 house margaritas, $3.50 appetizers) and giveaways of pink and white sailor hats.
2011 Atlantis Mexican Cruise Kick-Off Party at Top of the Park
Cruise-goers Joe Whitaker and Rich Ahrendt are organizing a meeting party at Top of the Park (525 Spruce Street) this Saturday evening from 5:30 to 8 pm. All are welcome, but if you're on the cruise, see either Joe or Rick when you arrive for a name tag.
Atlantis Pre-Cruise Party at The Loft
The Loft (3610 5th Avenue) will be hosting a pre-cruise party Friday from 6 to 10 pm; just mention Atlantis to get $3 wells and domestic beers, and a free "bon voyage shot" courtesy of bartenders Andy, Jeff and Gerald.
Set Sail Party at Rich's
On Friday night beginning at 10 pm DJ Dan DeLeon, DJ Will Z and the rest of the folks at Rich's (1051 University Avenue) will be wishing us a bon voyage, at a special Set Sail Party. Cruise goers will get in free, just by showing their itinerary (either a print copy or one on their cell phone) at the door.
Atlantis Cruise Pretty in Pink Party at Fuego in Puerto Vallarta
And San Diego won't be the only city on the cruise route throwing a party for us! The owner of Fuego Bar in Puerto Vallarta, Robert Hilton, will be hosting a "Pretty in Pink" party for the Atlantis Cruisers on the day we get in. There promises to be foods and drink specials all day and night, along with great music.
Glitter Party at Rich's
And on Saturday the 22nd, the day the cruise gets back ... the streets of Hillcrest will once again sparkle! Yep that's right, it's the return of the most environmentally controversial event on the San Diego party calendar, the Glitter Party at Rich's. As in past years, there'll be glitter glitter everywhere: free glitter painting, glitter go go boys, glitter on the floor (ala Ke$ha), etc, not to mention music by DJ Nikno until 2 am.
Atlantis cruisers should find their outfits from the on-board Shine! party perfect for this event.
Welcome Party at Spin
And finally, there's the Atlantis Welcome Party at Spin (2028 Hancock Street), Saturday the 22nd from 10 pm to 6 am (yes, after-hours!). With music by DJ Luis Perez and DJ Marcel Hetu, and a live performance by Alexis Jordan performing her hit songs Happiness and Good Girl. What a perfect way to keep the party vibe from the cruise going one extra day!
