VIDEO: Actor Anthony Rapp to appear at FilmOut San Diego's showing of "Rent" on Wednesday

SAN DIEGO – Anthony Rapp, who originated the role of Mark Cohen in “Rent” on Broadway and played the same character in the film, will be in town Wednesday night when FilmOut San Diego presents the movie at the historic Birch North Park Theatre.

Rapp will meet and greet fans before the film shows at 7 pm Wednesday, Dec. 14. Tickets are $10 HERE.

“Rent” proved to be Rapp’s breakout performance. He was a child actor who worked in regional theater and on television (“All My Children”), then moved on to Broadway where he appeared in “Six Degrees Of Separation.” He also heads a band called AlbinoKid.

The film directed by Chris Columbus was released in 2005, about nine years after Jonathan Larson’s musical made its debut off-Broadway in January 1996 before moving to Broadway in April 1996. The musical won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway show ran for 5,124 performances in 12 years, making it the ninth-longest-running Broadway show at the time.

Larson died the night before the off-Broadway premiere.

“Rent” is a modernized version of Pucinni’s classic opera, “La Boheme.” This rock musical is set in New York City’s East Village and tells the story of a group of starving artists struggling to live and pay their rent. Hurdles to their success and acceptance are poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic.

Rapp’s Mark Cohen is a struggling Jewish documentary filmmaker and the narrator of the show.

The film, which is rated PG-13, runs for 135 minutes.
