Jim Winsor's Out & About: Unofficial Gay Days at the San Diego County Fair is this Sunday

William Zakrajshek (aka DJ Will Z) is once again organizing a gay field trip to the San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds this year.

According to a Facebook page, the 2nd Annual Unofficial Gay Days at the Del Mar Fair is scheduled for this Sunday, from 2 to 11 pm.

It looks like the idea here is to flatteringly mimic the wildly successful unofficial Gay Days at Disney (both -world and -land) that grew to epic proportions in the past decade or so. To participate, all you need to do is be gay and show up! And preferably, to wear the unofficially sanctioned unofficial visibility colors, in this case, "... lets just rock the neons, bright colors... ya know anything that makes us look hot and tan!"

So far, the event seems to have generated a fair amount of interest (no pun intended), with over 80 attendees thus far on Facebook. So who knows, perhaps this will take off too and become an annual gay tradition here in San Diego.

Amazing High Heel Race is this Saturday

As I mentioned last week, this year's Amazing High Heel Race is this Saturday, from 3 pm to 6 pm.

For those of you who missed last year's spectacle, here's how it works: Teams of four to six participants will race through Hillcrest in a scavenger hunt, with the main idea being to photograph your team together at dozens of local bars, clubs and other local hot spots in the neighborhood. All while wearing 3-inch heels (at least).

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place, plus five special recognition categories: Highest Heel, Fiercest Heal, Most Creative Team Attire, Best Team Spirit and Biggest Blister.

Returning to defend their title this year will be the Mija Cochinas, consisting of Dan Anderson, Anthony Aragon, Rob Leyva and Team Captain Jimmie Read.

A fundraiser for the Hillcrest Pride Flag, last year's event brought in about $5,000 for the project directly, plus about $20,000 in additional donations from sponsors and local business leaders. You can read more about this year's race here, check out the contest rules here, and sign up online here.
