The club formerly known as Eden
As I'm sure you all already know, the news broke here on SDGLN last week that the old Universal/Eden space has been rented again to another club entrepreneur, Urbano Pelicon of the Range. And they wasted no time - this Friday and Saturday was opening weekend; on Monday they advertised a open casting call for new staff for Wednesday; and on Tuesday they announced a naming contest for the club.
I found out a few more details concerning the planned remodeling. Specifically, all raised floor areas will be removed, to increase ceiling height wherever possible. Glass garage doors are going into the front facade, to open up the whole space. That is in addition to the Range moving into the restaurant/Ciro's space next door (a move that is being completed this week).
The other interesting thing I learned was the reason behind what I call their "shotgun opening" this weekend. As you know, both Universal and Eden stayed closed for months prior to their grand openings for significant renovations. Not so in this case, they had to open immediately. Why? The liquor license was due to lapse from inactivity. Had that occurred, it would have taken the new owners a year to reapply to the ABC.
So this opening is unique in that it is a work in progress. They are open now, and will stay open Fridays and Saturdays for reasons pertaining to the liquor license. But big changes are coming. They will happen more or less gradually, with the new owners seeking community input along the way (as you can see by the naming contest, they've already begun to do this).
I, for one, am looking forward to watching this place mature and develop into someplace we can all support.
Last week's events
Check out SDPIX for all the new albums from last week, including photos from the Glitter Party at Rich's, Anita Longhorn's AIDS Walk Tupperware Party fundraiser at Martinis Above Fourth, Souleil at Bourbon Street, and the Opening Night of the aforementioned and yet unnamed new club where once Eden saw play. Happy viewing!
