TODAY: Community leaders to honor City Deli at party on eve of its closing

SAN DIEGO -- A ceremony and closing party will be held at City Delicatessen today at 5:45 pm. The iconic Hillcrest restaurant will close for good tomorrow, after nearly 30 years in business.

The restaurant space, which opened in Hillcrest long before the area became a culinary destination in San Diego, will soon become Harvey Milk's American Diner.

Michael Wright and Alan Blimes, the long-time owners of City Deli, will be honored today by City Council President Todd Gloria, Assemblymember Toni Atkins and state Sen. Marty Block with proclamations. Wright and Blimes have become well-respected business and community leaders, serving on many community groups and giving back to various neighborhood projects over the years.

Representatives from the Hillcrest Town Council, area business and community leaders, and 30 years of loyal patrons are all expected to attend today's celebration.

City Deli is located at 535 University Ave.
