Jim Winsor’s Out & About: The 2013 nightlife year in review

Happy New Year everyone! Given that 2013 is now in the history books, I thought this would be a good time to look back and reflect on some of the big local nightlife events and controversies of the past year.

Last year, straight female visitors to our gay clubs became noticeably more unruly, while at the same time iconic celebrities made memorable guest appearances.

A large nightclub on University Avenue opened, and then closed, all within the year. A new lounge, Commonwealth, opened in Hillcrest, while Gossip Grill began making preparations to move down the street. A popular lesbian night came to an end, and a new one arose to take its place.

A national campaign to boycott Stoli Vodka failed to take hold here locally. And shortly thereafter, a story I broke here concerning a gay cruise line’s decision to bypass Russian cities over the Putin regime’s appalling policy towards gays made headlines, and was picked up by other national sites such as Joe My God and Instinct Magazine.

A popular bar with a sterling reputation for supporting the disabled community got hit with an Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuit, and although the complaints were based on what most people would consider to be the flimsiest of pretexts, the bar was forced to settle because, well, that’s how the ADA works.

That was 2013. And we have some significant nightlife stories to look forward to in 2014, such as the return of Tantrums and Tiaras, the 25th White Party Palm Springs, and big news concerning Mardi Gras. Stay tuned folks, this should be quite a year coming up.

2013 in pictures

2013 was another banner year for us at SDPIX. I, along with fellow photographers Cali Griebel, Isaiah Walter, Vanessa Dubois and Josh Baker, shot (and edited) a grand total of 22,524 photos at 294 events around town. This is up a bit from last year, where we shot 18,969 photos at 297 events.

Speaking for both myself and the rest of the SDPIX team, we look forward to continuing to historically document the community via our photography in 2014.
