Big Mike will be celebrating his 57th birthday party at Harvey Milk’s American Diner this Sunday at 4pm, and as he has done in year’s past, it will also be a BIG charity event for the community.
Donations will be collected there for the Toni Atkins Women’s Heath Fund, and an impressive list of honorary co-chairs has been lined up, including Marty Block, Toni Atkins, Ron Roberts, Bonnie Dumanis, Todd Gloria, Kevin Faulconer, Kevin Beiser, and Nicole Murray Ramirez, along with Frank Lechner, Tom Brown and the entire staff of Harvey Milk’s American Diner.
The diner, Lechner told SDGLN Editor in Chief Ken Williams on Wednesday night, will be closed for two weeks, starting Monday, Jan. 27, for a major makeover.
Fridays on Fifth at Babycakes
A new weekly event is beginning at Babycakes this Friday: Fridays on Fifth. Billed as “San Diego's BIGGEST Happy Hour,” the event will actually include multiple businesses along Fifth Avenue between Brookes to Washington, all offering specials and discounts.
Babycakes will act as the “hub” of this new venture offering $3 cocktails, $3 beers, $3 wine and $5 bar bites/appetizers, and information on where to go for other great deals up and down the street that day.
SDPIX presents Shipwrecked at Rich’s
Arrgh mateys! Get ready to grab some booty, because this Saturday it’s time once again for the Shipwrecked party at Rich’s. SDPIX presents this fun theme night, which will include nautical decor throughout the club, hot go-go pirates, and other surprises. Pirate themed outfits are highly encouraged!
In addition to music by DJ Nikno and DJ John Joseph, look for a live performance by Arianna & The Rose, singing her new singles "Heartbeat" and "In Your Bed."
SDPIX staff will be on hand throughout the night giving away free VIP memberships, which include a number of newly added benefits. Current SDPIX VIP members receive $5 off cover before 11 pm. Those who do not yet have a membership may text SDPIX to 46786 and show the welcome message to the cashier for $5 off before 11 pm. Doors open at 10 pm, and the fun goes until 2 am.
Overdrive at Spin
Also this Saturday, San Diego's only monthly circuit party, Overdrive, returns with DJ Grind and DJ Tristan Jaxx:
“DJ Grind’s monthly podcasts have received more than 3 million downloads worldwide, and rank as one of the most popular dance music podcasts on iTunes & Podomatic. The San Francsico-based DJ is also the resident music critic for RealJock.com, and his work has been featured on SiriusXM’s BPM & OutQ, Fusion Radio, GayInternetRadioLive, and GaydarRadio, among others.
DJ Tristan Jaxx's hard-hitting signature brand of visceral house music commands an enthralling blend of deep, pounding sound, larger-than-life vocals and vast & voluminous instrumentals. These elements combine to form an aural orgasm of consistently elevated energy that is truly unique. With an obvious finger on the pulse of what is fresh, energetic and exciting, his hunger for compositions and sets that one can completely get lost inside is sweeping the world. His chart-topping podcasts (which are all recorded from his live sets) have skyrocketed his appeal to new heights.”
The party will also feature after hours until 4 am, and reduced cover for arrival before 11 pm ($5 before, $20 after).
New Gossip Grill opening delayed
The opening for the new Gossip Grill at 1220 University Ave. I talked about last week has been pushed back a bit (or, as they put it, “The Gals got turned around while driving the U-Haul”), and the count down on the closure of the old place has been reset as well. As soon as I find out more on what the new schedule is, I will let you know.
The first non-grand opening event at the new place has already been announced, however, an Evening with the Hilarious Vicki Wagner on Feb. 15.
