Jim Winsor’s Out & About: Memorial Day weekend in Hillcrest (and beyond)

Monday is Memorial Day, which means we have a three-day holiday weekend to look forward to! Here are some of the big events planned in and around the gayborhood to kick off the official beginning of summer.

Freak Friday Beach Pump at Urban Mo’s

Starting off on Friday, Urban Mo’s will play host to Glitz Glam’s Freak Friday Beach Pump. Starting at 10 pm, all your favorite fabulous freaks will be there “to make you sizzle!” Wear your most outrageous beach attire and your first shot will be on Glitz.

Active Duty at Rich’s

That’s right troopers, it’s time once again for another Active Duty: The Military Party at Rich’s. Report in at 2200 this Saturday, and get ready for six hours (yes, there will be after hours until 0400) of hot military go-go boys, camouflage costume fun and music by DJ Nikno and DJ Taj.

This will be a busy night so early arrival is suggested. Free Active Duty Dog Tags will be handed out fist come first served, and there is no cover before 11 pm with military ID. SDPIX VIP members received $5 off before 11 pm. If you don’t have an SDPIX VIP membership, not to worry … just text SDPIX to 313131 and show the message to the cashier for the early discount.

Michael Mack’s T-Dance on the Bay

On Sunday Michael Mack will once again set sail on his annual T-Dance on the Bay. This floating party is a Memorial Day weekend tradition here in San Diego, and as in past years, it will be a fundraiser for the Human Rights Campaign.

Boarding is at noon, departure will be at 1 pm, and a return to dry land at 4 pm. Music will be provided this year by DJ Marcel Hetu.

Memorial Day Weekend Rooftop Party at the W Hotel

Also on Sunday, Global Male will be invading the Gaslamp with a MDW Rooftop Party at the W Hotel. Look for plenty of great Latin and hip hop music provided by a surprise guest DJ, as well as drink specials and a pool for those who want to get wet. The party goes from 2 pm to 7 pm, and cover is only $5 (or free before 3 pm).

Memorial Day Weekend Stripper Circus at Rich’s

On Sunday night, DJ Ryan Kenney will be spinning at a special Memorial Day edition of Stripper Circus at Rich’s. It will also be a release party for Sam Smith’s new album In the Lonely Hour. Doors open at 8 pm.

Recovery Monday Tea Dance Party at Urban Mo's

And on Monday we have another annual Memorial Day weekend tradition, the Recovery Monday Tea Dance at Urban Mo’s. The party from 2 pm to 7 pm will feature “choice cocktails and sick beats by DJ Taj as we celebrate an extraordinary day off and remember our troops.”
