IMPERIAL BEACH, California – The owners of the popular Babycakes San Diego are about to open a new venture near the Imperial Beach Pier in South County.
Babycakes Bake Shop & Coffee House will open later this month at 874 Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach, CA 91932.
Co-owner Christopher Stavros, who since 1999 has owned a home near Seacoast Drive and Ebony Avenue in Imperial Beach (affectionately called as IB), said he is excited to launch an offspring of their popular mothership located in the heart of Hillcrest at 3766 Fifth Ave. in San Diego.
“When you discover a gem like IB, you want to celebrate it,” Stavros said. “What better way to celebrate a discovery than with a cupcake in hand?”
Co-owner Rafael Del Rio is very hands on as the company's pastry chef and creates all recipes and designs. He truly bakes from the heart and it shows, his fans rave.
Stavros said the focus on the new café will be on baked goods, coffee drinks, drinks, beach snacks and their famous cupcakes with indoor and outdoor seating.
Babycakes opened more than six years ago in Hillcrest in a Craftsman home built in 1889 and has evolved over time into a balanced hybrid showcasing a bakery, bar, restaurant, coffee house and event dessert catering. This year, Babycakes will create over 350 wedding cakes and keeps busy selling 300 to 500 cupcakes per day.
Babycakes Bake Shop & Coffee House will be in a prime location, catching waves just steps from the sand. Stavros says that as Imperial Beach continues its renaissance, Babycakes will be situated in the heart of the action with the new Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel’s Pier South and Cohn Restaurant Group’s SEA 180 just to the north, the future site of Coronado Brewing Company directly across the street to the east, the Imperial Beach Pier to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
