SDPIX celebrates 12 years, with party planned Saturday at Rich's

SAN DIEGO, California -- As the story goes, it all started with a man and his camera.

Johnathan Hale, publisher of Hale Media, started his company with San Diego Pix (SDPIX) 12 years ago - with just a digital camera and a big idea.

Since taking that first picture, SDPIX has grown substantially, with the addition of a print magazine, redesigned website, popular nightlife events, and regular support of community organizations. And during that time, SDPIX has always supported hundreds of charitable activities, helping numerous nonprofit organizations with sponsorships, event production, promotional support and much more.

Local community activist Benny Cartwright, who has worked on the SDPIX street team, said that he can’t remember a time when Hale and SDPIX weren't ready to step up to the plate and support the many community events and activities that he is involved in.

“Since I was a young student leader at San Diego State University running the LGBT Student Union, I remember not really evening knowing Johnathan but he reached out to see how he could help us make some of our events better to increase our impact,” Cartwright said. “He didn't stand to get much out of partnering with a small student group like ours but he did it because he cared about the community and knew that his resources could help make us thrive.”

Since its founding, SDPIX has become known for its event and nightlife photography, high quality nightlife events, promotional capabilities, website and glossy magazine. Many people in the community say it’s the one local publication that is a “keepsake” - with at least one avid reader having all 96 issues in his possession. Online, SDPIX has captured hundreds of thousands of photographs at local night spots and community events - possibly one of the largest such collections around.

Regular events hosted by SDPIX -- the weekly #WET contest at Bourbon Street, the monthly Birthday Bash at Babycakes, and a monthly theme party at Rich’s -- have all become staples of the San Diego gay nightlife scene. It is because of the success of these events - and the support of the brand’s loyal followers - that SDPIX has become such an integral part of the greater LGBT community - regularly providing support and sponsoring organizations such as San Diego Pride, FilmOut San Diego, Stepping Stone, San Diego Remembers, Hillcrest Business Association, The Center, AIDS Walk San Diego, the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, and many more.

Ken Williams, Editor in Chief of Hale Media’s local news publication San Diego Gay & Lesbian News and its national brand GLBT News Network, congratulated Hale on another successful year.

“The collection of products under the Hale Media banner - including SDPIX - are what make this company so unique and successful,” Williams said. “Through SDGLN, GLBTNN and SDPIX, we have been able to reach and affect the lives of so many people locally and around the world. Congratulations to Johnathan and the PIX team on 12 glorious years!”

Jonathan Rivera, Hale Media’s Social Media manager, said that supporting the work of Hale Media has been a great experience for him.

“Working with SDPIX has been a life changing experience for me,” Rivera said. “The amount of exposure to the community I've been receiving has been phenomenal. I couldn't have picked a better company to work for! Congratulations Johnathan Hale on such an amazing publication!”
