Jim Winsor’s Out & About: Were San Diego Pride parties mostly incident free in 2014?

A few months back, the Palm Springs Desert Sun wrote an article following the 2014 White Party, noting the relative lack of police and other emergency calls the event generated, particularly in comparison to straight music festivals of the same caliber.

I thought this was quite interesting and revelatory, and I made a commitment then to do the same sort of public safety inquiry and analysis of our own San Diego Pride parties, once they had come and gone as well.

And the results of that inquiry are now in. After making a California Public Records Act (CPRA) request through the San Diego Police Department's Media Relations Office, I discovered that of the 10 largest private out-of-Hillcrest Pride parties held this year (which include four circuit parties promoted by Bill Hardt Presents, four large Pride pool parties at downtown hotels, and two other private parties at Spin Nightclub), nine of those parties had absolutely no emergency calls at all. The only Pride event that did have police activity associated with it this year was the Zoo Party, by Bill Hardt Presents.

According to Officer Jericho Salvador, CPRA Liaison with SDPD, two police-related incidents occurred at the San Diego Zoo during the time frame of the party. One was a car burglary in the zoo's parking lot, reported at on Sunday, July 20 at 4:47 pm. Given that the Zoo Party had only just begun at 4 pm, it is unlikely that this incident was in any way related to the party.

The other item of note that day was a “911 hang-up call” made from the vicinity of the Zoo Party at 7:54 pm.

This is all good news, in my opinion! With perhaps minor exceptions, I’d say 2014 was a year where all our big Pride parties came off generally without incident. Hopefully things will stay that way in 2015, and beyond.

NFL football season begins

Gays who watch football rejoice! The Chargers season opener is coming up this Monday night, versus the Arizona Cardinals, and at least two establishments around Hillcrest are having special viewing parties for the big game that day.

Flicks will be having a Chargers Kickoff Party, beginning at 6:45 pm, with free pizza and wings, $3, $4, and $5 draft beers, and $5 Three Olive cocktails. They will also be having a U-Pick-Em contest, where a winner could snag a $50 bar tab.

And Hillcrest Brewing Company will be having a Bolt Up: Chargers Opening Day party from 6-11 pm. They’ll be serving up $3 Kill the Kegs, plus .50 cent wings and Blue Beer.

It should be noted that both Flicks and HBC, as well as Harvey Milk’s American Diner, will be broadcasting games this year on all the NFL nights, Sunday, Monday and Thursday. See the event calendar at SDPIX for more details.

Also, college and pro football games are always on the screens at Redwing Bar & Grill in North Park.
