Hillcrest businesses weigh in on the Orlando tragedy.
As all of you are no doubt aware, a horrific tragedy took place this past weekend at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Our local gay bars, nightclubs and party promoters were naturally quite affected by this, and were quick to put out statements of shock, sympathy, solidarity and support:
#1 Fifth Avenue
“Our prayers go out to the victims, families and friends all affected by this senseless tragedy. We share in the pain and grief that has affected our community as well, again. We need to remind ourselves to stand together and live without fear but with hope, love, tolerance and kindness..."
Babycakes San Diego
“We stand STRONG with Orlando! Everyone please VIBRATE PEACE!!! #OrlandoUnited”
MO’s Universe (Urban Mo’s, Baja Betty’s, Gossip Grill and Hillcrest Brewing Company)
“The #MOsUniverse staff is deeply saddened to hear of the senseless loss of so many lives and injuries of so many others.
Our moral code has always been to provide a safe environment for people of all walks of life no matter race, religion, sexual preference or gender identity. Our hearts hurt when this type of event takes place against our LGBTQ community and the world.
Please keep the guests and staff of Pulse Orlando in your thoughts today. #ShareLOVE #NotHate #AllOne”
“We are shocked and saddened by the tragedy in Orlando. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families as we stand strong and proud with our brothers and sisters in the Orlando LGBT community.”
Lips - San Diego

“The Rich's family is in mourning and we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Orlando. We are a community brought together by love and we will never allow hate to keep us from celebrating our love, fighting for our rights and pursuing our happiness.”
Fiesta Cantina - Hillcrest
“We want to spread the word to all of our Fiesta friends and family in case you have a family member/partner who was at Pulse. Prayers are with you if so.”
“In the wake of a terrible tragedy, we stand in solidarity as a member of the Hillcrest community. We are proud to serve those who are never afraid to be themselves and we can only hope that the love we see on a daily basis can be spread to those who need it the most. #PrayforOrlando”
“Today we join with the entire LGBTQ Community in wishing our friends and family support and peace in Orlando. #OrlandoStrong”
Martinis Above Fourth Table + Stage
“Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters at Pulse Orlando. The MA4 family sends overflowing thoughts of comfort and peace to everyone involved including Pulse's staff, patrons and their families & friends.”
Redwing Bar and Grill
“Everyone at the Redwing Bar & Grill sends their deepest sorrow for those impacted by the tragedy at the Pulse Orlando Nightclub, those in Orlando, and those affected near and far. Bars and Clubs, these are our safe spaces, not just for the LGBT Community, but for all!

We love every one of you!
Life is Precious!
Cheers of San Diego
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to our LGBT brothers and sisters in Orlando.”
Most of the independent promoters for the various San Diego Pride parties this year made official statements as well:
UNITE Music Festival
“UNITE! Music Festival sends its love & healing energy to all the friends & family of the victims of the Orlando mass shooting at Pulse nightclub. #sandiegounited #orlandostrong”
Paul Nicholls (co-promoter of Pride on the Pier)
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families in Orlando. After serious consideration, we feel it is important to continue our celebration of pride. With that in mind, we are taking extra security precautions to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable night. We will also be making a donation to the victims and their families. #CelebratePride”
Flawles San Diego
“As community members who host events that encourage LGBT celebration, pride, love, hope and possibility, yesterday has hit us so hard. To our family in Orlando, you are so deep in our hearts today.”
And even a couple of major post-Pride promotions chimed in too:
Red Dress Party San Diego
“It has been difficult these last few days and we took some time to try and understand why a tragedy like this had to happen in Orlando. Our hearts all beat to the same pulse and we mourn the loss of the people that belonged to our community, but celebrate their lives and the freedom they represented.
As we enter these next few months of Gay Pride celebrations let’s work together as a community to protect our safety and our freedom. San Diego's Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said, “We ask if you see, hear, or know something, to please say something."”
Matinee USA (Matinee San Diego)
“Now that the country has had time to get more of the facts and process what happened in Orlando, we at Matinee USA feel it's time to say something:
Being a Gay Nightlife organization - and one that's thrown parties in Orlando before - this has hit us incredibly close to home. We much empathize with the Pulse and Orlando community. Many on our team knew the victims, and even more of you that regularly attend our parties were directly affected by this tragedy. Our love goes out to you.
Pride month is a time that we recognize efforts made throughout history for LGBTQ Rights. It's up to us to continue to show the world that LGBTQ Rights matter and that there are still issues even in a world where Gay Marriage has become legal in many places in recent years.
We encourage people to do more than pray. Do more than celebrate. Become an informed citizen of your country and be proactive in ways to make change where you see fit. Educate yourself on issues that face our community and our world and find ways to contribute towards a change.
We started MATINEE USA's PRIDE WITH A PURPOSE years ago and through this we vow to make it easier for you to find ways to help. Stay tuned on just how we're making this change to help our friends in Orlando...”
Taken together, this is an obviously overwhelming outburst of support from one gay community to another.
But it is even more than that, if read through it closely: it is also a massive message of defiance. A message that says that we will not cower in fear; a message that we will not go back in the closet. If we do otherwise, then the anti-gay terrorists have won.
The gay nightlife scene has historically been part of the glue which brings and holds our community together, and from what we see here above, it will no doubt continue in that valuable role.
Orlando fundraisers this week
The clubs aren’t just supporting Orlando in words, but in deeds as well. Already charity events and tributes are in the works, both for this week and beyond:

This month we are supporting the PULSE VICTIMS FUND in light of the recent hate crime in Orlando. Our hearts are heavy and go out to all who have suffered from this terrible attack.”
“This weeks Flicker will be a fun one! EDM VIBES, a kick off to EDC weekend. DJ Taj will be giving the best EDM around, free glow sticks, 3 Sexy Go Go boys, and ALL the proceeds from the Jello Shots will go to the Orlando Victim Fund! Every bit counts so come support Thursday.”

7 pm: We Are Orlando at Rich's
“This coming Friday the 17th at Rich's San Diego. The queens, kings, burlesque, and aerialists of San Diego come together to raise money for the victims of Orlando. Please join us as all money gathered will go to this great cause.”

“Every year, at the end of our Parade, everyone is welcome to join together, march with us, and carry the Pride Flag through our community to our Pride Festival.
In light of the tragic events in Orlando, we again invite all attendees to take part in this annual tradition that this year will demonstrate our resolve, our solidarity, and our love.
