The San Diego Opera is one of the most widely respected members of the international opera community.

And on Friday, March 23 you can join fellow San Diegans for a performance of Florencia en el Amazonas at the Out at the Opera event. This includes a pre-opera mix and mingle reception along with your tickets.

This is the first-ever Spanish-language opera commissioned in the United States.

Here is the synopsis and details:

"Famous opera diva Florencia Grimaldi returns home to the Amazon to perform and dreams of finding her long lost lover, a butterfly hunter who has disappeared into the jungle. As she and her fellow travelers board a steamboat and begin a magical journey down the river, the lines between fantasy and reality become enmeshed. Experiencing powerful elements of nature merged with the supernatural, Florencia experiences an awakening, sheds her chrysalis and her spirit transforms.

With a libretto by Marcela Fuentes-Berain and inspired by the magical realism writings of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán transports us to the mystical Amazon River with nature sounds and lush, romantic melodies reminiscent of Puccini and Debussy.

San Diego Opera is proud to have been the first major opera house in the U.S. to present Catan’s first opera, Rappacini’s Daughter and welcomes this, the first-ever Spanish-language opera commissioned in the U.S."

Out at the Opera is on Friday, March 23 at the San Diego Civic Theatre, 3rd Avenue, and B Street, Downtown San Diego.
