Karl Lagerfeld, the legendary fashion designer who single-handedly lifted Chanel out of its creative slump and into modern design starting in the '80s has passed away. He was 85.

With his face and persona equally as recognized as his fashion, Lagerfeld began his work with Chanel in 1983 and continuously served with them until his death.

Born in Germany, his creative influence extended into accessories at Fendi and of course his titular label.

Often brutally honest and opinionated, Lagerfeld was also self-aware. When he started at Chanel, he famously said, "When I took on Chanel, it was a sleeping beauty—not even a beautiful one. She snored.”

Personally, Lagerfeld lost his partner in 1989 as a result of an AIDS-related illness.

Many in the fashion world gave condolences upon hearing of Lagerfeld's death.

"We have lost a creative genius who helped to make Paris the fashion capital of the world, and Fendi one of the most innovative Italian houses," said Bernard Arnault, the chairman, and CEO of LVMH fashion group. "We owe him a great deal: his taste and talent were the most exceptional I have ever known. The death of this dear friend deeply saddens me, my wife and my children. We loved and admired him deeply."

Donatella Versace also gave a statement on social media about Lagerfeld's passing.

"Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I," Versace wrote. "We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you."
