10 Celebrities Who Openly Embrace Their LGBTQ Identity

In the post-millennial era, there is an ever-growing awareness about the rights of people who do not want to conform to the conventional norms of sexuality and gender identity in society.

Partly due to the influence of the internet, more and more people around the world are able to connect with each other, be more free and vocal about their sexuality and identify themselves as LGBTQIA+.

Many countries have promptly acknowledged LGBTQIA+ rights and legalized same-sex marriages, which is a significant development in the human rights movement worldwide. Several celebrities, who themselves are heterosexual, actively support LGBTQIA+ rights, which shows the increasing acceptance of the movement in society.

However, despite all these, there is still a substantial stigma, discrimination, and violence toward the LGBTQIA+ community around the world.

1. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is often considered a celebrity icon of the LGBTQ+ community and has called herself gender fluid, a term used to express non-identification with rigid binary genders.

She is an avid advocate of LGBTQ+ rights and is the founder of the “Happy Hippie Foundation”, an organization that works for the welfare of the LGBTQ+ community.

2. Elliot Page

Elliot Page, the actor of “Umbrella Academy”, who was AFAB (assigned female at birth), has openly called himself queer and trans and is vocal about his gender identity.

In a letter shared on Twitter, he announced his preferred name and pronoun (he, his), and expressed his “overwhelming gratitude” to those who had supported him in his transitioning journey.

He mentioned that it was remarkable to finally accept and love who he really was and to pursue his authentic self.

3. Tim Cook

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc. has openly stated that he’s proud of being gay, and it was one of the greatest gifts God has given him.

He has also mentioned that he had felt a responsibility to speak openly about his sexuality and hoped that being a business executive and influencer on young people, his openness could help the LGBTQ+ youth overcome the problems of homelessness, despair, etc.

4. Lady Gaga

The pop icon Lady Gaga has identified herself as bisexual, though there’s an allegation that she is falsely claiming so in order to appease her huge LGBTQ+ fan base.

But she has promptly responded to the allegation stating that it is not a lie that she is bisexual and she like women and that is who she was and has “always been”.

She has been active in a number of LGBTQ+ rights causes and founded her own organization “Born This Way Foundation” to support the causes.

5. Angelina Jolie

Actor Angelina Jolie is a long-time supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and has stated that she was bisexual. In 2003, she said that if she fell in love with a woman, she would absolutely want to “kiss and touch her”, and that she indeed had fallen in love with a woman when she was 20. She told she was open about her bisexuality because she really wanted people to know that she had been with a woman.

6. Billie Joe Armstrong

Billie Joe Armstrong, the vocalist and lead guitarist of the rock band Green Day, had been openly vocal about his bisexuality. He mentioned that he always had been bisexual and that bisexuality is something that people are born with.

He stated that it’s a society that conditions people to believe that bisexuality is bad when actually it’s a “very beautiful thing”.

7. Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart, the popular actress of “Twilight”, stated in 2017 that she is bisexual. She told that there’s no confusion about someone knowing that they are bisexual, and for her, there’s no confusion at all and it’s the opposite actually.

She also mentioned that she’s lucky to be living in this time of history, and kids of today’s age find it comparatively easy to identify with their sexuality comfortably.

8. Kristian Nairn

The “Game of Thrones” actor Kristian Nairn who played the character Hodor in the show has said that he has been openly gay his whole life. He said that he never tried to hide his sexual identity and had always been waiting for some interviewer to ask him about it.

9. Gillian Anderson

Gillian Anderson, the actress of “X-Files” mentioned in 2015 that in the past she had engaged in homosexual relationships. She also stated that she was open to doing it again, and that relationship is about loving another human being, their gender being irrelevant.

10. Victor Garber

The actor Victor Garber confirmed in 2013 that he was gay, though, he mentioned that he never actually had hidden his sexuality and his twenty-year-long relationship with his partner Rainer Andreesen, whom he married in 2015.
