After weeks of rookie and player clinics, a tough player draft, and hours of team practices, the San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL) finally kicked off their opening season this past Saturday, March 12, at Doyle Field.
This season marked the eighth year for the SDAFFL and also boasts the largest number of players ever to participate. Last year, the league had about 170 players and 10 teams, while this year, it has grown to over 200 players -- increasing the number of teams to 13 -- making it one of the largest flag football leagues of its kind in the nation.
"Of the 200+ players, [more] than 40% of them are first-year players," SDAFFL Commissioner Mike Paganelli said. "This is going to be our best season yet!"
With opening day now behind them, the SDAFFL season will continue through May 21, with playoffs June 4 and June 11. Then in the fall, two teams will have the opportunity to fly off to Houston to participate in the 2011 Gay Bowl, from Oct 7-9. There is lots of football to look forward to, whether the NFL suits up this year or not.
SDAFFL teams play every Saturday at Doyle Park and Rec Center located at 8175 Regents Road, San Diego, CA 92122.
Here are the scores from opening day's games:
