Boot~ique: So you think you can surf?

Surfing can be an intimidating sport to take up, especially with all the surfers you see daily, riding the waves along the San Diego coast.

Personally, I’ve wanted to surf all my life. In fact, it was one of the driving forces for my move out to San Diego from Boston last year.

Fortunately, I found the Surf Diva Surf School and took a few lessons right away. With their help, I got up and finally rode my first wave – ok – now, I’m addicted!

A few months later, I was pleasantly surprised to see Izzy Tihanyi, co-owner of Surf Diva, enroll in my Boot Camp.

After a few sessions, she contacted me to share her excitement about my program and invited me to join forces with her and the Surf Divas.

To me, this was the equivalent of one of my heros asking me to be part of the team – I was definitely in!

So, Bootique Fitness and Surf Diva have come together to create a complete surfing program, Surf FIT.

Remember, surfing isn’t just a men’s sport … and it doesn’t have to be as intimidating as it looks, or as difficult as it seems; but you do need to learn some basic skills in order to catch and ride your first wave.

Doing surfer-specific workouts that improve your strength, power, endurance, balance and flexibility will have a tremendous effect on your ability to surf and give you the ability to pop-up and carve through those Pacific ocean waves.

Not only will you become the surfer you've always dreamed of becoming, but you will also benefit and tone your body, boost your health, and gain a new, exciting talent.

Surf FIT is designed to help you paddle, pop up, and surf like the pros.

Here are the skills will make you a better surfer:

  • Upper body endurance to paddle out to your wave
  • Upper body strength to press up on your board
  • Lower body strength and power to pull your legs up under you to pop up
  • Core strength to transfer the power your legs to pop up
  • Flexibility to move your legs under your body
  • Balance and core stability to maintain control while you stand on your board
  • Lower body endurance to keep your legs bent while you enjoy the ride

Aside from surfing technique, surfer-specific fitness drills will also improve your ability to ride the waves.

The Surf FIT schedule consists of two surfer-specific boot camp classes per week, every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:45 - 7:30 am and a Saturday surf lesson where you will be braving the ocean from 9:00 - 10:30 am.

In addition to those exciting, high-intensity classes, you will also receive nutritional coaching, a monthly fitness assessment to help you track your progress, weekly health and fitness tips, support and motivation to help you reach and conquer your goals.

Being fit is great! But – what’s even better is being able to do something you love because you are fit enough to do it. And where better to show off the bikini body that you have worked so hard for, than on a surfboard rocking the waves?

That’s what is so fun about teaching these Surf FIT classes. I get to see my clients put their new skills to real practice every week and watch the joy in their face as they ride their wave. Not to mention, I really love the feeling I get when I’m on a wave.
