Payment due date extended to Jan. 15 for first wave of Covered California enrollees

SAN DIEGO -- California residents who signed up for health insurance through Covered California's first deadline of Dec. 23 are covered effective Jan. 1, and the first premium payment has been extended to Jan. 15 in order for coverage to remain in effect for this month.

Covered California has provided a handy chart which shares information on each health plan included in the program and how to make payment to the individual plan providers. The chart can be viewed HERE.

Those who have not yet enrolled in coverage can still do so. The next enrollment deadline is Jan. 15 to begin coverage on Feb. 1.

Open enrollment, which began Oct. 1, 2013, will go until March 31. Uninsured individuals who do not select a plan by that time will have to wait until the next open enrollment period to sign-up for coverage and will be subject to a fine for failing to purchase a plan.

Locally, The San Diego LGBT Community Center will host a special presentation on Friday, Jan. 24 from 3-5 pm on Covered California and health insurance. Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins will provide introductory remarks, followed by a panel of community leaders and experts who will discuss HIV/AIDS, transgender issues, Latino/immigrant experience, and other issues related to healthcare under the Affordable Care Act.

The free event is open to the public and childcare will be available. For more information about the event, contact Aldo at agallardo@thecentersd.org or 619-692-2077 ext. 121. To RSVP for childcare contact Jane at jschmoll@thecentersd.org or 619-692-2077 ext. 121.
