(SAN DIEGO) During the holiday season, it’s always difficult to select the ’perfect’ gift for friends and loved ones. What do you get for the father who already has every tool, gadget and piece of sports memorabilia under the sun? What about the fashion-forward best friend or chatty coworker? Even more difficult: the younger sister with pricey taste?
Surprisingly enough, the right gift for each of these people may actually be the same thing: a donation on their behalf to a local charity. By supporting a local non-profit organization, the gift-giving dilemma is resolved, all while helping out those in your immediate community who are truly in need.
One San Diego charity that could benefit from donations this year is Mama’s Kitchen, San Diego’s only county-wide meal delivery service for men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer. Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund, a food bank for people with AIDS, discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious food.
In 2006, the organization expanded its service to San Diegans affected by either AIDS or cancer, and today, Mama’s Kitchen provides approximately 1,000 meals a day, each day of the year to men, women, and children in San Diego County.
The organization has posted its Mama’s Kitchen ‘wish list’ online, explaining that donations received will go towards funding much needed repairs, kitchen equipment, and of course food. Your family, friends and coworkers will likely appreciate the gift of $60 that will provide one week’s worth of hot meals for someone who can use assistance not just during the holiday season, but all year round.
So, this holiday season when searching for the perfect gift, think about the difference your charitable contribution will make in the life of someone in the San Diego community with AIDS or cancer.
