MINNEAPOLIS – Another milestone is reached for the gay clergy in the U.S.
The Rev. Mary Albing has been the unofficial pastor of Lutheran Church of Christ the Redeemer on the south side of Minneapolis for the past seven years, but Sunday she was officially recognized as a minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
Albing, who is in a committed same-sex relationship, is believed to be the first openly gay or lesbian minister with ELCA since the denomination voted last August to accept gays and lesbians who are in committed relationships.
Albing, 55, is just one of a handful of gay and lesbian ministers to lead mainstream denomination churches.
