Wine Tasting at Bourbon Street will aid local food service for AIDS/HIV and cancer patients

SAN DIEGO – Bourbon Street will be hosting a wine tasting to benefit Mama’s Kitchen this week.

The University Heights nightclub will be the site of Mama’s Kitchen’s 15th annual Wine Tasting Event and all proceeds will go to aid the organization's daily operations.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Mama’s Kitchen is the only non-profit organization in San Diego to provide three home-delivered meals seven days each week to about 600 men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS or cancer at absolutely no cost.

The event is open to the public and takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Bourbon Street, 4612 Park Blvd.

“Bourbon Street has been a long time supporter of Mama’s Kitchen,” said Alberto Cortes, executive director of Mama’s Kitchen.

“They have graciously offered their establishment year after year as the venue for our annual Wine Tasting.”

Guests will enjoy numerous wine pours throughout the evening and a wide selection of hors d’oeuvres.

In addition, partygoers will enjoy a “Lucky Ticket” silent auction, which features sumptuous gift packages from San Diego’s finest dining and entertainment venues. A “Wine Deck” opportunity drawing also gives guests a chance to purchase a playing card for a 1-in-52 chance of winning 25 bottles of premium wine.

“The Wine Tasting is a great opportunity to mingle and just have fun,” Cortes said.

John Winkelman, marketing manager for Priority, a MOMS Pharmacy, said it is all for a good cause.

“The important part is supporting Mama’s Kitchen and the critical services they offer,” he said. “The fun part is that while supporting Mama’s Kitchen we all get to have a wonderful time and meet old friends in a party atmosphere.”

Food and beverage providers include HRM Rex-Goliath Wines, Southern Wine and Spirits, Sycuan Casino, Jake’s on Sixth, Lei Lounge, Decker Brothers Gourmet, Muzita Bistro, Soltan Banoo Restaurant, Pizza Gourmet Express and Small Bar.

Additional event sponsors include Priority Pharmacy - a MOMS Pharmacy, James Ziegler Advised Fund at the San Diego Foundation, Mobile Medics, Promos ROK Solid, Jeffery Simon & Michael Crawford, Susan Guenzel and Michael Abdou Farmers Insurance.

Many of the event sponsors have been personally affected by Mama’s Kitchen’s work.

One of the event sponsors, Rick Koening of Promos ROK Solid, said that, "15 years ago I had some friends that were diagnosed with HIV and we heard about MK’s [Mama’s Kitchen] meal deliveries and what a wonderful group they were. Some of my friends took advantage of the service and it made me want to help whenever I could."
