REVIEW: Major nips and tucks bring new life to Lips cast, showroom and menu

SAN DIEGO – The glamorous divas of Lips are getting all dolled up for tonight’s grand reopening, but Monday night the ladies showed the media what all the fuss is about.

From the moment that Cher opened the media showcase with a spot-on impersonation, the divas brought down the house, song after song. They performed with great enthusiasm and energy, and most of the performers nailed their lip-sync impersonations of celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Tina Turner and Dolly Parton.

The costumes, the hair and the illusions were spectacular.

The enthusiastic audience lapped it up, frequently stuffing dollar bills down bras or tossing money at the performers while they were on stage.

Some members of the audience – Jason Wimberly, in particular – couldn’t resist the temptation to become human props in some of the routines, much to the delight of their table-mates.

Lips has been a fixture on El Cajon Boulevard in North Park for five years and in San Diego since 1999. So the owners decided to give the old girl a face-lift, embellishing the décor with more glam and glitz, adding VIP cabana seating, revising the menu, and changing up the cast and the performance schedule.

The new look

The showroom redesign is by drag queen decorator Brenda Starr, aka Robert Tabor, who lives up to her reputation that “less is NEVER enough.” Look for colorful flashes of Moulin Rouge, Barbie’s Dream House and a drag queen’s dressing room. From gold-leaf female statues that guard the stage to velvet and sequin drapes that bedazzle the eyes, the new showroom is a feast of color and crammed full with objects of interest to discover.

The new menu

The media showcase dinner offered a sampling of the new menu, and waiters brought platters of food for guests to self-serve. Items included Ladonna – Lips Fruity Salad; Kitty Litter – Drag Sampler Platter of chicken tenders, fried zucchini, coconut popcorn shrimp and cheesy drag balls; Cashetta – Blackened Salmon; Paris – Chicken Roulade; Eggplant-Rolla-Tootie; and a platter of divine desserts.
