Doobie Brothers headline June 20 fundraiser for Promises2Kids

SAN DIEGO – Promises2Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending child abuse, brings the Doobie Brothers to town for its third annual Summer Promises Concert next week.

The gala event will take place from 5:30 to 10 pm Monday, June 20, at the La Jolla residence of Joan Waitt, Promises2Kids honorary co-chair. All proceeds from the concert will directly benefit Promises2Kids.

Susan Golding, CEO and president of Promises2Kids and a former mayor of San Diego, said the Summer Concert Gala is always popular and is San Diego’s signature event.

“This event was the idea of executive leadership at Promises2Kids,” Golding said. “We were looking for a signature event that the community could look forward to attending each year and one that would support our goal of raising money to fight child abuse. It has been that and much more!”

"We look forward to an unforgettable evening and raising money to help abused, neglected and abandoned children," said Rocio Flynn, co-chair of this year’s Summer Concert Gala.

The benefit will not only feature the three-time Grammy Award winning artists the Doobie Brothers, but will also include a sit-down dinner prepared by the chefs from the Hyatt Regency La Jolla that guests will enjoy under the stars. Guests will also get the opportunity to bid on silent and live auction gift packages, all set against breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Auction packages offer a perfect opportunity to support the organization and help stop child abuse. And Golding said the packages at this year’s event are the best they’ve ever had!

The packages include the opportunities to dine at “Top Chef” Brian Malarkey’s Asian-inspired restaurant, Burlap, attend upcoming Grand Slam tennis tournaments, enjoy orchestra level VIP tickets and round-trip limo service to the American Music Awards in November and relax with a four-night vacation to the GoldenEye Hotel and Resort in Jamaica!

Throughout the evening guests can dance, relax and reminisce to popular tunes by the Doobie Brothers such as “China Grove” and “Blackwater.”

“Every year we welcome new, amazing talent to the concert,” Golding said. “We chose The Doobie Brothers for their sound reputation that would resonate with our Promises Summer Concert Gala donors and inspire and motivate people to participate.”

Support from the community

The event is supported each year by a variety of donors. This year’s donating sponsors include Redfearn & Associates, Bridgepoint Education, Cubic Corp. and Gatto, Pope and Walwick, LLP.

Steve Redfearn, president of Redfearn & Associates, said thr company produces non-profit events at a reasonable price that are still the top of the line. The company produced the first two Summer Gala events for Promises2Kids. The first Gala in 2009 featured Jewel and the second in 2010 featured Pat Benatar.

“Because of our involvement with Promises2Kids and our belief that they do wonderful work in San Diego for the Polinsky Center and foster kids in general, we were pleased to be able to underwrite some of the concert expense,” Redfearn said.

“We feel great about all the events we do and each cause is an important one,” Redfearn said. “I cannot think of anything more important than helping a child - one who likely has no home and no family - get back on their feet and perhaps into a home and a family.”

A mission to stop child abuse

And that’s exactly what Promises2Kids aims to do. The 30-year-old non-profit organization originally began as the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation of San Diego County. The organization has been working tirelessly to stop child abuse and neglect throughout San Diego County since 1981.

“No other organization in the area offers such a broad array of support systems,” Golding said. “Nor does any other organization in the area offer such a wealth of opportunity to connect with a wide variety of resources, programs, and collaborative partners focused on eliminating child abuse.”

Promises2Kids offers more than 26 programs all aimed at helping keep children safe and stopping child abuse and neglect. Programs offered by the organization include the Polinsky Children’s Center, a temporary safe haven for children who have to be separated from their families for their own safety, the Guardian Scholars Program, a nationally-recognized program that helps former foster children reach their goal of obtaining a college degree, and the Rivers of Hope Birthday Club, a program sponsored by San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and his wife Tiffany that helps foster children feel remembered by sending a special birthday gift card to each foster child on their birthday.

“Through a variety of prevention, education, and advocacy programs, Promises2Kids is working to break the cycle of child abuse,” Golding said.

The organization also recently launched a Military Families Support Initiative , a campaign designed to help increase awareness of the types of support that military families, especially those with children, greatly need.

“Military families are under more pressure than ever," Golding said. “Through the Families Also Serve Campaign we hope to raise awareness and increase access to resource information."

Help save a child’s life

Promises2Kids continues to battle child abuse and neglect throughout San Diego County each day and the third annual Summer Concert Gala with the Doobie Brothers is another great way to accomplish their mission.

"Last year's event with Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo raised nearly $375,000 toward breaking the cycle of child abuse," Golding said. "This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and through the community’s support we are able to continue our efforts to prevent child abuse and provide support for abused and neglected children."

Tickets cost $350 per person for general admission, $500 for general admission plus admission to the VIP reception, and $3,500 for a Bronze Scholarship. Tickets to the event are still available and can be purchased online here or by calling Promises2Kids at (858) 427-1112.

For those who cannot attend the Gala, but would like to support Promises2Kids, a variety of options are available: volunteer at an event, attend an event as a sponsor, join the Monthly Promises Club or the Children’s Circle , give a foster child a birthday gift through the Rivers of Hope Awaiting Adoption Birthday Club, join the Legacy Club, or make a donation to one of the organization’s gift drives.
