SAN DIEGO -- The proposed Hillcrest Pride Flag project is moving through the City of San Diego's planning process, and will go before both the San Diego Planning Commission and the San Diego City Council in upcoming weeks.
The planning commission will review the proposal at its April 12 meeting, and will forward its recommendation to the full City Council in advance of its May 15 meeting, at which time the final ruling on the project's outcome will be made.
A group of neighborhood activists are working with the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) to install a flag pole on Normal Street where it intersects with University Avenue that will fly an 18 foot x 12 foot rainbow flag year round. The proposal includes the installation of the 65-foot pole and some enhancements around the base.
Construction of the monument is planned to be completed before this year’s San Diego LGBT Pride weekend, which is scheduled for July 20-22.
“The plan is to have this flag waving over the Pride Parade this year, but it can only happen if people come out and voice support for the project at these meetings,” said Benjamin Nicholls, executive director of HBA.
Nicholls encouraged people to come to the Planning Commission and City Council meetings to voice their support for the monument.
Several community members spoke before the Uptown Planners at their meeting in February when that group voted to endorse the project. While there was some opposition and concerns about the project's size, the neighborhood planning group voted 8-6 in favor of the project.
A week later, the Hillcrest Town Council, a resident's group, voted 13-4, with two abstentions, in favor of the project, as well.
The Planning Commission, which is made up of design professionals who review development projects in San Diego, will meet on Thursday, April 12, at 9 am at San Diego City Hall, 202 C St. in downtown.
HBA is encouraging community members who wish to share their thoughts on the project to save the date for the City Council's Tuesday, May 15 meeting. Additional details about the meeting time will be provided when they are available.
