Gay bishop to debate marriage equality at Skyline Church in East County

SAN DIEGO -- Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop of a major Christian denomination, will be coming to San Diego this weekend to participate in a marriage equality panel at Skyline Church.

The free event, called "A Conversation on the Definition of Marriage," will be hosted by the Ruth Institute, a rabidly anti-gay group. It will begin at 6 pm Sunday, July 29, at the mega-church in East County.

Talk about going into the lion's den.

Bishop Robinson will be joined by Dr. John Corvino to speak in favor of marriage equality, while Dr. Rob Gagnon and Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse will argue that marriage is between one man and one women.

Skyline Church is notorious for its anti-gay activism and financial support for passage of Proposition 8 in California.

Robinson, who is the ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire, emailed the Rev. Canon Allisyn Thomas of St. Paul's Cathedral in San Diego and asked for parishioners to lend him some moral support by attending the panel discussion. Supporters will meet at 5 pm Sunday to carpool from St. Paul's parking lot on Olive Street to Skyline Church.
