Both politicians are openly gay
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- California state Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach), chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, has endorsed Long Beach Vice Mayor Robert Garcia for Mayor.
Both politicians are openly gay.
"Robert has the vision, experience, and fiscal discipline to lead one of the most populous and diverse cities in the United States," Lara said. “The next mayor must continue to focus on creating good paying jobs, cultivate our local economy, and engage our public safety officials to keep our neighborhoods safe. Robert has the skills and zeal to get the job done- this is why I am proud to endorse his candidacy for Mayor."
Vice Mayor Garcia was recently reappointed to the California Coastal Commission as an appointee of the Senate Rules Committee, making him one of the 12 voting members of the commission and the first person in over 30 years to be appointed to the commission from the City of Long Beach.
"I am honored to have the endorsement of one of our strongest advocates in the state Legislature, Senator Lara,” Garcia said. "California is back on track, and as Mayor I will work with our state legislators to ensure Long Beach’s local schools, colleges and healthcare facilities reap the benefits of our improving economy.”
Senator Ricardo Lara was elected in 2012 to represent the 33rd Senate District, which includes the cities and communities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lakewood, Long Beach, Lynwood, Maywood, Paramount, Signal Hill, South Gate, South Los Angeles, Vernon, and Walnut Park. Prior to serving in the State Senate, he served one term in the state Assembly.
