The Range Kitchen & Cocktails restaurant is already closed
SAN DIEGO -- The gates to the spacious entertainment complex at 1202 University Ave. will close for the last time Friday night - exactly one year after the current nightclub and restaurant opened.
The space that is home to 1202 Nightclub will open at 7 tonight and Friday for one last celebration on the patio and to thank customers for their support. The Range Kitchen & Cocktails is already shuttered.
1202 Nightclub and The Range Kitchen & Cocktails opened in the space in August 2012, less than a month after Eden Nightclub and Restaurant closed on July 27, 2012. Eden closed quite abruptly and the new owners had a very short period of time to reopen the space to be able to maintain the current liquor license.
The nightclub space reopened in late August unnamed, and management turned to the community to help give the space a new name. The Range Kitchen & Cocktails, which was initially located across the street at 1263 University Ave., moved to the restaurant side of the venue a week later.
1202 and The Range were the third nightclub/restaurant to occupy the space since Universal Nightclub and Dish Restaurant first built out the property in mid-2008. Universal closed on Jan. 2, 2010, and was replaced by Eden, which opened its restaurant and patio in fall 2010 and the nightclub in January 2011.
Soon, 1202 and The Range's owners and management had begun to make several changes to the venue and had planned to eventually re-create the entire experience at the complex, which includes a large nightclub area, outdoor patio bar with fire pits and seating areas, a full-service restaurant and very large kitchen.
In a year's time, the gay-owned and operated club held several events to benefit the community, supporting organizations such as San Diego Pride, San Diego Remembers, Development in Gardening (DIG), Christie's Place and others.
After nearly a year of operating as 1202 Nightclub and The Range, the owners decided to close down the business. The Range served its last meal several weeks ago, and only the patio bar has remained open on weekends.
It is unclear what will become of the space after the three grand attempts to make it work, but San Diego Gay & Lesbian News has been told that prospective tenants are in negotiations with the landlord. The nightclub space is likely to become a commercial or retail store, but it is unknown what will become of the patio bar and adjoining restaurant.
SDGLN will continue to report on developments at this property as they become known.
1202's final weekend
Customers are invited to celebrate 1202's year-long run tonight and Friday night. The patio bar will open each night at 7 pm.
As a thank you to the community, 1202 will offer drink specials including Pinnacle Vodka, Jameson, and Rumplemintz drinks for $3. Everything else will be $5.
There will be no cover all weekend long and a DJ will spin on Thursday and Friday nights.
1202 is located at 1202 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
