"Boy Meets Girl" sweeps FilmOut Festival Awards

SAN DIEGO, California – “Boy Meets Girl,” a unique love story between a young transgender woman and her straight best friend, has swept all the major 2014 FilmOut Festival Awards.

The movie won Best Narrative Feature, and its four top stars also collected honors for Best Actor in a Feature Film (Michael Welch), Best Actress in a Feature Film (Michelle Hendley), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Michael Galante), and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Alexandra Turshen).

Eric Schaeffer, the talented filmmaker behind the “Boy Meets Girl” project, won awards for Best Screenplay and Best Director. You can read SDGLN’s Q&A with Schaeffer by clicking HERE.

“The success of our Opening Night is reflected in the FilmOut Awards,” said longtime FilmOut programming director Michael McQuiggan.

“’Boy Meets Girl’ swept the majority of the main awards. We knew that we had a special film, and the recognition of an almost four-minute standing ovation just cemented the fact that this was a perfect, bold and original selection to kick off the festival. Not to mention that NOT ONE audience member of 450 people left during the Q&A,” he said.

“This was a very memorable and emotional moment for director/writer Eric Schaeffer and the principal cast members who FilmOut flew in for this kickoff event. The staff at North Park Theater, audience members and the FilmOut board of directors all got to experience this milestone achievement for FilmOut collectively,” McQuiggan said.

“The Audience Awards were more mainstream in selection, but ‘Boy Meets Girl’ also won them over.”

The elegant Canadian actress Kate Trotter shared the award for Best Actress in a Feature Film for her performance in “Tru Love,” another unusual love story between an older woman (Trotter) and a younger lesbian.

Best Documentary award went to “Folsom Forever,” directed by Mike Skiff.

The Best International Feature was awarded to “Tru Love,” from Canada.

The Festival Awards are decided by a FilmOut jury.

Meanwhile, the 2014 FilmOut Audience Awards are voted upon by the public. “Boy Meets Girl” won Best Narrative Feature, “Waiting In The Wings: The Musical” won Best First Narrative Feature, “The 10 Year Plan” won Best Comedy Feature, “John Apple Jack” won Best International Feature and “Folsom Forever” won Best Documentary.
