LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- Eusabia Dominguez and her fiancé, Jason Gilbert, sat around the dinner table in the cozy apartment they share, making wedding plans. When the couple exchanges vows on Saturday, Feb. 21, the couple believes they will make local history — because Eusabia will become Las Cruces' first openly transgender bride.
"When I was a little boy, maybe 5 or 6 years old, my favorite show was 'Designing Women,'" said Dominguez. "I wanted to grow up to be just like Suzanne Sugarbaker. I didn't just want to be a woman — I wanted to be the prettiest, most fabulous woman."
Dominguez was born in Silver City, but grew up mostly in Las Cruces. All her life, she knew that she was meant to be female.
