WALKERTON, Indiana — The owners of Memories Pizza this week were among the first to come out in support of Indiana’s anti-gay law and immediately felt the backlash of criticism. Then they announced they were temporarily closing down because of the heat they were facing.
Overnight, Memories Pizza became the darlings of the Christian Right and the anti-gay activists. An activist named Lawrence Billy Jones III started a GoFundMe page to benefit the pizzeria, and it took off like wildfire after Glenn Beck and other right-wingers took up their cause.
The goal was to raise $25,000 for the homophobic O’Connor family. To date, more than $500,000 has been pledged to the fund.
