The Marine Corp. Times is reporting that a Facebook post has two active Marines under investigation for their part in threatening the LGBT community via a social media photo.

The I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), based out of Camp Pendleton became concerned when a corporal dressed in fatigues took a selfie, pointing his rifle at the camera then overlaid text that read “Coming to a gay bar near you!”

That photo (at left) was then posted to a closed group of 25,000 members on Facebook titled “Camp MENdleton resale.” The marine in question also commented “Too soon?” in a comment.

First Lt. Thomas Gray is the spokesman for I MEF (pron. “eye –mef”), and has reported to the Marine Corp. Times that they have identified the Marine, but cannot release any details at this time.

Lt. Gray adds that they are not taking the incident lightly and will take “appropriate action.”

I MEF released the following statement in regards to their position on discrimination among their members.

"The Marine Corps does not tolerate discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, gender or religion...This type of behavior and mindset will not be allowed, and it is not consistent with the core values of honor, courage and commitment that are demonstrated by the vast majority of Marines on a daily basis."

The founder of the Facebook group, Michael Moss, said he deleted the post as soon as it came to his attention and the Marine was banned from the social media club.

“We do not tolerate hate speech,” he said according to the Marine Corp. Times.

This news comes just days after a man on Craigslist posted a picture of a firing handgun in the men-seeking-men classifieds with the words, “San Diego, you’re next” and “We need more Orlando’s [sic].”

The LGBT community is on high-alert after a lone gunman went into Pulse, an Orlando LGBT nightclub, early Sunday morning and opened fire with an assault rifle, killing 49 people and injuring 53.

SDGLN will keep you updated as this story develops.

The photo at left was posted by a Facebook user, it is not known if that person is the Marine in question.
