Two police officers reported to have been shot, suspect taken into custody.
Reports are coming in that two police officers have been shot in the area of Acacia Grove Way and 37th Street.
About 11 pm on Thursday night, two suspects were reported to have engaged in a shootout with police officers.
The shooter is still on the loose and both officers have been taken to the hospital.
It is still unclear if there is more than one suspect.
Police have brought in K9 units and are currently following a trail of blood into thick brush where it is suspected the shooter may have fled.
UPDATE: It has ben confirmed this morning that one of the officers involved in the shooting has died while the other is in undergoing surgery for his injuries. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer released the following statement Friday morning:
“Last night we lost one of San Diego’s finest. We grieve for our fallen officer and stand with his family during this very difficult time. We also pray for the second officer shot last night as he recovers from surgery. Violence against the men and women who wear the badge is violence against us all. I ask all San Diegans and all people across our nation to join together in support of our officers who courageously protect our communities. We need them and they need us.”
UPDATE: 12:24 am: Two SWAT teams have officially cordoned off the area and are looking for a second person.
UPDATE: One suspect has been taken into custody.
UPDATE: Eyewitnesses claim they saw two men flee the scene.
