NY man organizing massive LGBT march on Washington this June

An LGBT activist in New York is organizing a National Pride March on Washington this summer. He hopes that hundreds of thousands of people join him for the protest.

David Bruinooge, 42, lives in Brooklyn and was so inspired by the women’s event last week that he wanted to create his own protest, this time for the LGBT community.

“I was watching the events unfold on TV and I was very proud and inspired by all the women, the strong women in our country who were kind of taking this to the street and getting their voices heard,” he told the Washington Blade. “And in the back of my mind as an openly gay man I thought the gay community should be doing something like this to follow up on the momentum.”

He intentionally scheduled the event for June 11, the same day as the “Capital Pride Festival.”

Bruinooge is fully aware of the organization that goes into such a project. He would like Capital Pride’s support and perhaps an endorsement.

“My intention was never to undermine what was going on with D.C. Pride,” Bruinooge said. “They obviously have the infrastructure and the mass support to help this become a reality.”

The LGBT community had their last major demonstration in Washington back in October 2009.

Hundreds of Thousands of activists participated in “The National  Equality March” demanding the same equal and civil rights as heterosexuals.

Organizers for the National Pride March say they don’t want to impede on cities holding their annual Pride festivals on that weekend, but feel a show of solidarity in organizing a local march would have greater impact.
