Woman with no helmet suffers life threatening injuries after scooter crash in Hillcrest

A woman who was riding a Bird scooter without a helmet is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she crashed in Hillcrest on Friday. 

It happened at 9 pm in the bike lane on the westbound side of the 1200 block on University Ave. The 42-year-old woman was not wearing a helmet when her scooter overturned and she hit her head. One report said she was riding in tandem. 

According to 10 News, the woman was taken to a local hospital. Police say she had been drinking. 

In an unrelated incident, a man was killed when his Bird scooter was hit by a car from behind at about 4 am according to the Chula Vista police. He was riding southbound on the 1400 block of Third Avenue. 

Esteban Antonio Ramon Galindo, 26, died shortly after being transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center. It cannot be confirmed at this time if Galindo was wearing a helmet. 

The driver of the vehicle cooperated with the police and the cause of the crash is still being investigated. Authorities do not think that drugs or alcohol were involved.
