Former San Diego City Councilmember (District 3), Council President, and Interim Mayor Todd Gloria announced he is running for mayor. In a YouTube video posted on Wednesday Gloria made his announcement and if he wins he will be the first person-of-color and first openly gay mayor in city history.

“It’s clear that San Diego needs strong, experienced, and progressive leadership in the Mayor’s Office – leadership that has the courage to take our city beyond business as usual and solve the long-standing problems that have faced our city. That’s why I’m running for Mayor, said Gloria. “San Diego may be America’s Finest City, but we should strive to be more than just fine. We should dare to be great.”

A San Diego native, Gloria grew up in Clairemont and went to James Madison High School. After graduating, he then earned bachelor’s degrees in history and political science from the University of San Diego. From there he began working for the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency.

In 2008, he was then elected to the San Diego City Council representing the Third District and stepped in as interim mayor after Bob Filner resigned amid controversy.

Gloria's Climate Action Plan was authored at that time and is now law.

He was then elected to represent San Diego in the 78th Assembly District in the California State Assembly. His platform includes many topics close to his heart.

“As Mayor, I intend to address the issues facing everyday San Diegans like housing affordability, access to public transportation and good jobs, and putting an end to homelessness,” Gloria said in a statement. “It’s time San Diego became a city of opportunity that invests in every neighborhood so that every person and family who calls San Diego home can see a future here for them, their children, and their grandchildren.”
